Many people are mesmerized by the beautiful setting of Poco Diablo Resort in Sedona and it’s not surprising since our resort was built on what was once a spacious ranch in earlier days.
There were only 800 residents in the area by the 1960’s and much of Sedona was ranch land with very few homes. As you can see in the photo, there are no homes built in the area prior to the building of Poco Diablo. Ahthough there are more residents in Sedona, the beauty still exists today.
As listed in the wonderful book, Sedona, by Lisa Schnebly Heidinger and Janeen Trevillyan, Sedona Historical Society, part of the area known as Doodlebug Ranch was sold and the Poco Diablo Resort was built in the 1970’s, boosting Sedona as a tourist destination. Residents enjoyed an elegant meal overlooking the weeping willows and magnificent lawn without leaving town.
An interesting link with Poco Diablo Resort and the Chapel of the Holy Cross – Margurite Brunswig Staude, who designed and paid for the building of the Chapel, was married to Tony Staude. His family owned the Doodlebug Ranch, the area where Poco Diablo Resort was built.
Some history on Doodlebug Ranch was obtained from the Sedona Blog which contains a variety of information on the area. The welcoming golf course and spacious grounds, have offered wedding couples the perfect venue for their special day. There were a list of celebrities that owned homes in the area in the early days, among them Walt Disney and Lucille Ball. Poco Diablo has hosted hundreds of weddings throughout the years and one in particular was the niece of Lucille Ball, Jennifer Ball, who got married to William Jackson at Poco Diablo Resort in 1980.
Wedding styles have changed throughout the years but the popularity of Poco Diablo remains the same. It is the perfect location for your Sedona wedding.
